Creating Original Art for the ECHO Home Page

When ever possible, I try to hire contemporary artists to create imagery for the sites I design. Reg Davidson and Patrick Wesley, two accomplished visual artists from Haida Gwaii on the Canadian west coast, are among those with whom I’ve collaborated. I brought this aspiration to the ECHO project.

It was December, 1999, and everyone on the History of Canada Web project was anxious to get into production. I’d just joined the team and needed to come up with a design concept for the ECHO home page, quick.

I began searching for a strong image that would be a visual metaphor representing the main sections of the site. At the same time, I was searching for a graphic treatment that would evoke the notion of history.
